Boston rower Stuart Harley has gained a silver medal at the recent British Indoor Rowing Championships held at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.
Stuart from Butterwick who is a member of Boston Rowing Club (BRC) and ‘Creations Gym’ at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre rowed amongst nearly 2000 other competitors of all various ages and abilities with only the world number one beating him in his class. Stuart is an adaptive rower, spending much of his time in a wheelchair and uses only his arms during rowing both on indoor rowing machines (Ergo’s) and on open water in specially adapted boats and seats. In the ‘Adaptive-arms only’ open category, Stuart achieved his silver medal in a time of 4 minutes 49 seconds which was 17 seconds off his personal best, and although disappointed with the time, Stuart was nevertheless pleased with the result as he had been suffering with a cold in the week leading up to the race.
Stuart is working hard to aim for under 4 minutes 15 seconds for 1km on the Ergo which would see him eligible for Team GB selection, and is also keen to pass on his thanks to Creations and BRC for their continued support and assistance during his training.

Boston Rowing Club (BRC) rowers have shone at Bedford this weekend, as the town's Star Rowing Club held their annual head of the river race.
Ben Thomas and Will Campion took first place in the junior boy’s double sculls in the first division of the day on the 2Km course. Rowing together as a four for the first time; Harriet Housam, Mia Heaton, Nicole Hendy, Olivia Apletree and Leanne Cozens (Cox) took first place in the women’s novice fours which was made even sweeter as it was their first sweep oar rowing event as well. Alex Young made his debut at a rowing event with junior coach Jeff Elms in an intermediate 3 double scull and also took away a class winners medal.
BRC took part in all five divisions of the day in better than predicted weather , however the heavens opened during the second division, but the rain refused to dampen spirits as all 24 of BRC's competed and fought off some very strong competition from around the country

Eighteen members of Boston Rowing Club attended the Ancholme Rowing Club’s Head of the River Race in Brigg on Sunday; a 2700m race spread over 2 divisions. Out of our 14 crews entered an impressive six class wins were achieved against a total of 153 crews from York, Sheffield, Bradford, Lincoln, Nottingham, Doncaster and Brigg.
The fastest Boston boat of the day was also the fastest junior 16year crew overall, where 'Bill and Ben' alias Ben Thomas and Will Campion, rowed their double scull (J162x) to 23rd place overall and a well earned class win in 11mins:20seconds.
Special congratulations go to Adrian Apletree who received a tankard for the fastest veteran single scull (Vet B/C Nov 1x). The class win was deserved reward for the early morning and late evening rows that Adrian commits to and helped him to 35th place overall in 11:43, a massive 50 seconds faster than his nearest rival.
The women’s novice coxed quad consisting of Nicole Hendy, Leanne Cozens, Ailsa Linnell, Emily Gall and Cox Nick Stow, produced a smooth and encouraging display by finishing in 12:14 (57th overall) and almost two minutes ahead of their nearest rivals for their WNov 4X+ class win.
Fuchsia Summerfield and Catherine Grayson had possibly one of the closest class win finishes of the day by beating York City by 2 seconds in 12:27 (63rd overall). This also gave them their second event win over the last two head races.
Nicole Hendy steered her way to a second medal of the day in the Junior 15 year’s double scull bow position with stroke team member Harriet Housam in 13:20 (101st overall) and 10 seconds in front of St Peters York.
In a well executed row Boston's final class win went to Sue Durrant and Lorrie Armstrong in the Women’s veteran double sculls (W Vet C/D Nov 2X) who rowed home in 14:05, thirteen seconds ahead of Bradford to finish 122nd overall.
The standard of the rowing and fitness levels from all the club members is improving week by week, which is a reassuring reward for the commitment of all the BRC coaching staff. Other times from BRC crews were:

Boston Rowing Club enjoyed fine and sunny conditions for their annual junior club fun day on Saturday 5th September when thirty boys and girls between aged between 11 and 18 enjoyed fun activities on the river Witham from the Carlton Road club venue.
The young rowers were split into four teams of mixed age groups and abilities and had great fun cheering and supporting each other from the newly improved staging areas whilst their team members rowed a 200m obstacle course. The day and the course were designed by BRC's Susie Matson who organised many adult helpers and friends to coordinate the crews through many sculling techniques in order to complete the fun course.
The day finished with the end of year presentations and disco (with a Hawaiian theme) in the clubs function room. Several well deserved and fun prizes were given out on the night including:

9th August 2009:- Peterborough Summer Regatta    photos    Open pdf

With the summer regatta season soon coming to a close Peterborough summer 500m sprint regatta is one of the highest performance events of the season, with crews from around the country looking to gain important status victories before the oncoming long distance head season.
With some of the club’s crew members, being away on holiday, and the event having to turn over 200 crews away, due to capacities levels being reached, meant only 5 Boston crews were in attendance.
In the J15 single sculls, Will Campion, who over the season has shown great improvement, was against 10 other crews, split up into 3 first round heats, with the winner from each progressing to the final.  From the start Will went away very well, with him being neck and neck with one crew, as they pulled slightly ahead of the other two. This was a very close and entertaining race as up to halfway all crews were holding their positions. Unfortunately for Will at this point, a problem with his boat arose, forcing him to slow down to a dishearten paddle to the finish.
Women’s Novice double sculls saw two Boston crews competing. Both crews racing in separate heats needed to win for a place in the final, second place would mean another round (repechage) for a chance of reaching the final.
The first time pairing of Jo Calver & Hannah Campion was the first to race. Although both experienced in regattas this was a first for Hannah in the stroke seat, and Jo’s first mutli-lane event. Going well off the start, they took a deceive lead over the pair from Rob Roy BC, and sat just behind the Peterborough pair. Looking strong throughout the race, it seemed Jo & Hannah had paced themselves well, to go pass the Peterborough double just before the finish, but were just held off and had to settle for second place advancing them to the repechage.
Next on the water were Leanne Cozens & Helen Cooke. Not only was this the first time for the pair to race together, it was also the first ever event for Helen. After the start the pair was slightly behind in 3rd place but showing good promise against the more experienced crews, as Helen at stroke, revealing no signs of pressure, and determined as Leanne to be first over the finish line.  Throughout the race the pair fought well and was closing on the other crews by the finish, but was pleased with 3rd place after a very promising performance.
Hannah & Jo’s repechage race got off to a shaky start but by halfway were neck and neck with the other two crews, but after a very powerful comeback were unable to edge in front just missing out on a place in the final.
After racing throughout the season in an eight, it was time for Catherine Grayson, Ailsa Linnell, Zoe Hudson & Emily Gall with Nick Stow coxing to try their luck in Women’s IM3 coxed fours. With 16 crews competing in this event, and only 2 out of each heat to the semi-finals very close races were ensured. This was proved straightaway in their first round heat as the ladies started very well, but nothing separated all the crews. Even by halfway it was still anybodies race. It was only in the closing metres of the race did the ladies and a crew from Cambridge edge in front together to earn a place in the semi-finals.
The semi-final proved the same as the ladies once again started very well and a battle to the finish was on. All the way though the race all the crews were together and even as they passed over the finish line, no crew knew who had won. When the official result announced the ladies had finished in 3rd place missing out on a place in the final by less than a second.
After an historic win at St Neots it was time for the Ladies eight to take to the water again, although without Violet & Angie from original crew, and now also racing at the higher IM3 status.
With the crew of Leanne Cozens, Hannah Campion, Zoe Hudson, Emily Gall, Ailsa Linnell, Catherine Grayson makes her debut in the stroke seat, and competing for their first time in an eight Helen Cooke & Jo Calver, with Nick Stow coxing. As the ladies lined up on the start of the final the pressure didn’t show as they went off very well, lying in 2nd place just behind Twickenham but had a good lead over Grosvenor RC. As the race proceeded the Boston Ladies were starting to reduce the distance between themselves and Twickenham, but as both crews pushed for the line, the ladies had to settle for a very respectable second place after a very hard fought race.

25th / 26th July 2009:- St Neots Regatta    photos    Open pdf

The history books will need to be rewritten this week as Boston Rowing Club can now boast a winning Ladies Eight for the first time in it's 153 year history, after competing in the two day regatta at St Neots.

The winning eight comprising of Hannah Campion (Bow), Angie West (2), Leanne Cozens (3), Zoe Hudson (4), Emily Gall (5), Catherine Grayson (6), Ailsa Linnell (7), Violet Summerfield (Stroke), and Nick Stow in the Cox's seat, won in the final of the Women's Novice Eights after an impressive 500m sprint against a top London club, Barnes Bridge Ladies. Technique, stamina and determination ensured that the result is not only the first ever women's eight  win for BRC but also the first eight win since the Men recorded a home victory in 1986. This win clearly justifies the purchase of the new Filippi Eight, last year, which being the first ever brand new eight for the club.
The Ladies were not the only winners at the weekend, a second win of the regatta for the Club and the Campion family saw Will Campion partnering Ben Thomas to a fantastic win in the 500m final of the J15 double sculls after progressing through three previous rounds.
With a total of 18 crews from the club racing over the 1km and 500m courses during the two days, notable performances included:
Saturday 1km course.
IM2 2X - Waleed Butt & Duncan Thomas (Semi-final).
WJ14 2X - Harriet Housam & Nicole Hendy (Semi-final).
WJ14 1X - Harriet Housam (Semi-final).

27th June 2009:- Peterborough Junior Championship Regatta    photos    Open pdf

Harriet Housam wins a gold medal at one of the main junior regattas of the year.

Two members from the club, Nicole Hendy and Harriet Housam, were amongst approximately 500 other junior rowers from across the country competing at the J14 Championships at Peterborough's Thorpe Meadows 1000 metres 4 lane regatta course.
Both girls were racing in the WJ14 single sculls, which because of the large entry had been split into two divisions, placing Nicole in Div A and Harriet in Div B.
In the morning heats Nicole started well, but unfortunately just missed out on a repechage place after an encouraging row of 5min 21sec. Harriet in her heat lead from the start and quickly pulled away from the other crews to finish in a time of 4mins 41sec, securing her place in the afternoon finals. In the Division B final Harriet exceeded even the expectation of her Coach by rowing an astonishing race finishing 5 lengths in front of her nearest rival, and in so doing recording a personal best 1km time, cutting her heat time by a 20 seconds to finish in 4mins 21secs.
This awarded Harriet a gold medal, but also placed her in contention for a rowing bursary, which was being presented to the fastest WJ14 1X winner across both divisions. After a short wait Harriet was unfortunate, missing out on the prize by only one second.

14th June 2009:- Learn To Row Course    photo

Five more adults from the Boston area have successfully completed the latest Learn to Row course today, after six two-hour sessions at the Club. The Course is the latest in a series of Learn to Row sessions being ran by the club aimed at all members of the community.
"The sessions cover the basic aspects of rowing technique from terminology, manoeuvring, confidence and balance skills, stroke technique, rhythm etc, but especially safety and fun" explained Suzie Matson who is part of the team of new and experienced Coaches.
Sean who has just completed the course, also added "I have had a brilliant six weeks, we have been coached in singles, doubles and quads boats during the course which has nicely prepared me for leisure rowing or a foundation for competitive rowing if I wish to train more often".

7th June 2009:- Peterborough Spring Regatta    photos    Open pdf

Fourteen club members attended day two of Peterborough’s Spring Regatta, the 500m Sprint Day.

All of the nine crews performed well in some rainy and windy conditions, with some of them getting their first taste of multi lane racing.  The Ladies eight comprising of L. Cozens, A. West, H. Campion, Z. Hudson, E. Gall, C. Grayson, A. Linnell, V. Summerfield and coxed by N. Stow were closely beaten into 3rd place by only 2 seconds in the closing few metres in the final of WNov 8+ after holding 2nd place for about 90% of the race.
Jeff Elms and Adam Berry qualified for the final of the IM3 2X after an impressive 1st place in their heat and a 2nd place in their Semi Final. They sculled well throughout the final, but were unfortunately beaten into 2nd place by a 1 second.
In the J15 singles sculls Ben Thomas swept all competition aside in his heat in a time of 2mins 01secs, but was unable to find the same adrenalin levels in the final and came 4th. In the same event Will Campion demonstrated good progress with a 3rd place 2mins 17secs row in his heat.
There were some very satisfying improvements from other Boston crews in their heats, and if the luck of the draw had been slightly different, it would have seen more Boston crews in the Semi Finals due to achieving faster times than crews in other heats.
Adam Berry in IM3 1X recorded a time of 01:50 in his heat and Will Campion & Ben Thomas in J15 2X achieved 01:49 for their heat, but although faster than other crews from other heats, were unfortunately not proceeding to the next round.
Fuchsia Summerfield likewise rowed faster than everyone from other heats in 2mins 11secs for a very controlled race in WJ15 1X, however came home 4th in a tight race only 2seconds behind the 2nd and 3rd placed boats.
In the WJ14 1X Nicole Hendy improved once again for her second regatta in a matter of two weeks with a 3rd place in her heat, and the Women’s Quad of Emily Gall, Hannah Campion, Ailsa Linnell, & Catherine Grayson, who were racing above their status in IM3 4X were unlucky to just miss out on a place in the final.

23rd May 2009:- Doncaster Regatta    photos    Open pdf

The Club began the Spring and Summer regatta season with yet more success, with ten members competing at Doncaster.
Over a 600m two lanes buoyed course around a continuous bend, the club celebrated victory in the WJ14 2X event, with Nicole Hendy at bow and Harriet Housam at stroke, the two girls excelled and finished easily ahead of the competition from Chester Le Street by at least four lengths in the final.
The Club was represented in no less than five other finals on the day. Catherine Grayson and Emily Gall were only half a length behind the Doncaster crew in the W Nov 2X. Will Campion made his way to two finals, firstly in J15 singles sculls, and secondly in the IM3 2X where he was partnered with Jeff Elms, unfortunately on both occasions the crews were beaten by a Doncaster boat. After making brilliant progress through two earlier heats, Adam Berry decided to take an extended detour in his final of IM3 single sculls, which proved costly against a Doncaster sculler, as he only needed to maintain his course and the same stroke rate to win. Henry Apletree showed great promise by making his way to the Nov 1X final, but was just beaten by a faster sculler from Sheffield City.
Other promising performances were as follows:
IM3 4X- A. Berry, A. Apletree, N. Stow, J. Elms (Semi Final).
Mxd Nov 2X  C. Grayson & N. Stow (Qtr Final).
Mxd Nov 2X  E. Gall & H. Apletree (Semi Final).
WJ14 1X  N. Hendy (Qtr Final).
WJ14 1X  H. Housam (Semi Final).

26th April 2009:- Scrumpy Row    photos    Open pdf

Boston Rowing Club took three of the top five places at the Ancholme Rowing Club’s annual 'Scrumpy Row' from Brigg to Brandy wharf on Sunday. The handicapped row over  a 7 mile (11.5k) course on the  river Ancholme had  21 of the club’s members, with a wide range of experience between them making up 12 of the 37 crews taking part, which included crews from; Ancholme, Peterborough, Huntingdon, Doncaster, Grosvenor, Leicester, Lincoln and Bradford rowing clubs.
In glorious spring sunshine, but rowing into a strong head wind Boston's own Harriet Housam swept home in first place. The club's 13 year old won the race in a single scull by an astonishing 5 minutes and 53 seconds (with handicap), and with an actual rowing time of 1 hour 1 minute was able to beat a selection of other singles, doubles and quad sculls on time alone without handicap.
Fourth place overall was secured by the successful family pairing of sisters Violet and Fuchsia Summerfield in a J17 double scull. The girls achieved good technique throughout even with the windy conditions and had only a marginally better handicap time than several more experienced crews. Fifth place overall  went to the Mxd Novice Double of Catherine Grayson and Nick Stow who rowed Boston’s actual fastest time for the course in 52.08 without handicap.
All Boston rowers performed well on the day. Aaron Jeffery continues to show promise in the J15 single sculls as he battled to catch Will Campion and Ben Thomas who both had very solid performances. Henry Apletree showed his consistency with a 54.23 in a single which was 5 minutes ahead of Adrian Apletree and Andrew Cook who performed well in a Veteran Novice Double Scull. With this also being Andrew's first competition since joining the club after completing an Adult Learn to Row course earlier this year. Chris Belton also rowed a sure and steady race finishing in 11th place.
One of the most encouraging rows came from Boston’s other J14 girl Nicole Hendy. Nicole finished in 12th place after only picking up oars about 9 months ago for the first time. The Junior 17 quad of Hannah Campion, Zoe Hudson, Emily Gall, and Ailsa Linnell showed good timing and determination and finished only a minute behind the women’s veteran quad of Angie West, Leanne Cozens, Sue Durrant and Lorrie Armstrong, which finished in a highly commended sixth place.

28th March 2009:- Lincoln Head   photos   Open pdf

Twenty Two Boston Rowing Club members battle against the elements in hard windy conditions at the Lincoln Head over a 3km upstream course held on the River Witham.

Five crews fought fiercely against the conditions for hard earned victories. In the morning, Division 1, Harriet Housam won the WJ14 1X in a time of 21:37 even after a diversion into a reed bed. The afternoon ,Division 2 provided the club with 4 more wins starting with Ben Thomas in the Nov 1X, with the benefit of the calmer afternoon conditions, Ben completed his second row of the day in 15 minutes 27 seconds. Adrian Apletree was assisted to victory in the Veteran Nov 2X by late substitute and Coach Nick Stow for Boston’s second fastest row of the day in a time of 14:08. Violet Summerfield and Ailsa Linnell in the W Nov 2X, earned a fine result considering they had already competed the W Nov 8+ in the morning, and with this being their first doubles race together, covered the course in 16 minutes 2 second, some 39 seconds faster than their closest opponents. Chris Belton kept on winning form as he took the Veteran Nov 1X in a time of 16:10.

Considering the conditions and the length of the rowing/warm up distance to the start (approx 5km), all crews can take great satisfaction from the hard work and effort put in, before, during, and after the race.

After the final heat of the day, Harriet finished 7th overall achieving 1015 metres within the 4 minute time limit, a fantastic result for Harriet.

15th March 2009:- Newark Spring Head     photos

Promising results for the 8 crews which race over the 3K course.

A nice sunny day was well deserved for a very organised event, bringing out good performances from all our crews against tough competition.
Chris Belton in his first race of the day won the Vet E/F/G single sculls in a time of 10:37 and later achieved a respectable forth place in the novice single sculls. Ben Thomas was a close 2nd in the J15 1X, with Henry Apletree also gaining a hard earned 2nd place in Nov 1X.

Sweat, tears, and maximum effort was not quite enough for the W S4 4+ of Lou Elkington, Ailsa Linnell, Violet Summerfield, & Emily Gall with Nick Stow coxing as they missed out on victory by a mere 3 seconds.
The W Nov 4X+ of Violet Summerfield, Ailsa Linnell, Catherine Grayson, & Emily Gall, coxed by their coach Nick Stow, gave a very encouraging performance, keeping a very smooth determined pace throughout the race to achieve a well deserved 3rd place.

25th January 2009:- Boston Head

With a record entry of 270+ crews for this year's head, a full day's racing looked set. Unfortunately this was not to be the case, as boating for the first division was postponed for an hour due to high winds affecting a percentage of the course. Hoping it would ease as the morning progressed. After a further inspection of the course, the Safety Officer & Race Committee agreed that it would be unsafe for the event to proceed.
